Behind bars for a year on the sunny island of Mallorca, five German lads finally regained their freedom.

Just about twelve months ago, Spanish law enforcement nabbed a group of young German men in Mallorca. They were under suspicion for allegedly forced sexual activities and passive observation, targeting an 18-year-old holidaymaker. More recently, the boys from North Rhine-Westphalia were granted a brief respite from pre-trial detention. The investigation is still ongoing.

Numerous reports from Palma's reliable sources reveal that five suspects, now accused of participating in coerced sexual activities or passively observing, were granted bail. The specific circumstances surrounding their release have yet to be disclosed.

The case concerns an 18-year-old German tourist, who had previously crossed paths with one of the accused at the notorious Ballermann beach. Spanish authorities allege that one of the suspects secretly filmed the incident using his smartphone, in July 2023.

Hailing from Märkischer Kreis and Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia, the five German men had initially been taken into custody for suspected gang rape. The Hagen Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany announced its determination to further probe the five suspects.

Among the accused, one managed to secure his release shortly after detention, successfully defending himself against the rape charges. According to the "Mallorca Zeitung", the sixth suspect received bail of 10,000 euros in September.

Nevertheless, the release of all suspects does not imply the demise of the case. The investigation remains alive and well, basing its progress on the existing evidence. In Spain, a conviction for such charges may result in prison sentences reaching up to twelve years.

The temporary liberty grant for one suspect raised a few eyebrows, sparking speculation about the credibility of the rape allegations. Despite their release, the investigation into the case has shown no signs of slowing down.
