WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST - AFTER HOUTHI ATTACKS IN THE RED SEA: USA FORGES ALLIANCE TO PROTECT SHIPS

Against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, the USA is establishing a military security alliance with European and other partners. Known as "Operation Prosperity Guardian," the initiative aims to safeguard merchant ships from Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea, a region that has seen a surge in aggressive activities by these rebels, backed by Israel's arch-nemesis, Iran. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has indicated that his country is considering participating in this alliance.

Meanwhile, the cycle of violence in the Gaza Strip continues. Israel continues its war against Hamas while tensions with Hezbollah along the border with Lebanon heighten, with Israel's military warning the Shia militia militia of a potential escalation of the fighting.

RENEWED ATTACKS ON SHIPS BY HOUTHI REBELS

According to U.S. military reports, two ships – the "Swan Atlantic" and the "M/V Clara" – were attacked by Houthi rebels in the southern Red Sea. The former was struck by a drone and a missile, both originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, while the latter reported an explosion nearby. No casualties were reported in either incident.

Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, the Houthi rebels have resorted to drone and missile attacks against Israel and its allies. Even non-Israeli ships, such as a container freighter belonging to the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, have been targeted. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who is currently in the region, emphasized that this is an international challenge that requires collective action to protect freedom of navigation.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared the Gaza war to a battle against the Iranian axis of terror. He pointed out that the Houthi attacks, in addition to hindering trade and military operations, pose a threat to international maritime routes, including the Bab al-Mandeb strait. Netanyahu reiterated Israel's determination to achieve a complete victory against Hamas in Gaza.

ISRAEL ACCUSES HEZBOLLAH OF "CONSTANT ESCALATION"

Despite the turmoil in Gaza, Israel is also facing challenges along its northern border with Lebanon. The Israeli military has accused Hezbollah, a close ally of Iran, of a consistent escalation in the region. Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus remarked that Israel is edging closer to war, citing Hezbollah's increasing aggression along the border.

The Shia militia, as Conricus notes, is putting Lebanon in a dangerous position by embroiling it in the ongoing conflict. Around 80,000 Israeli civilians have been evacuated from the nearby border region due to this escalation. In response, Israel has once again bombarded Syria with rockets.

USA WORKING ON HOSTAGE RELEASE

The United States government is reportedly working on a new agreement to secure the release of hostages, held by the Islamist Hamas group in Gaza. National Security Council Communications Director, John Kirby, underlined that while a deal is not imminent, ongoing negotiations are being pursued. Contingent upon reaching a fresh agreement, ceasefires and humanitarian aid measures will be implemented.

According to press reports, Mossad chief David Barnea has been discussing potential hostage release negotiations with CIA Director William Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Abdulrahman Al-Thani, although these allegations have yet to be confirmed by officials.

As of now, Israeli estimates suggest that over a hundred hostages remain in the custody of Hamas forces in Gaza. The militant group is also withholding the bodies of several kidnapped citizens. Hamas has released a new video of Israeli hostages, featuring two older men and another speaking in Hebrew, adding further anxiety to their plight.
