In Grimmen, the largest pedigree poultry show of the country is underway, showcasing around 680 vibrant birds from diverse species and breeds. Organizers assure stringent vet checks and inspections, including a ten-day quarantine period for participating animals, to ensure their health and protect against bird flu.

Last week, bird flu infections were reported in a Ludwigslust-Parchim district's turkey farm, necessitating the euthanasia of about 25,000 animals. To avoid similar incidents, Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus urged vigilance. Memories of a super-spreader event a year earlier in Demmin—which led to 80 secondary outbreaks—linger.

Despite bird flu concerns, the Grimmen show persists, highlighting the rigorous quarantine and vet checks implemented to safeguard bird health. Offering a remarkable medley of animal species and breeds, it continues until Sunday.

Besides these measures, quarantine and vet checks play a vital role in preventing bird flu outbreaks at pedigree poultry shows. The thoroughness of quarantine measures, veterinary involvement, and strict biosecurity protocols like flock management and cleanliness contribute to their effectiveness.

Though past incidents like Demmin's super-spreader event underscore the necessity of robust protocols, adhering to this comprehensive approach can drastically reduce the risk of bird flu outbreaks at such shows.
