Africa poised for flight if Africans claim command positions
The 11th UNESCO African Week and the 9th Africa Engineering Conference are currently underway, bringing together leaders and experts from across the African continent. The event, held in Munyonyo, Kampala, has seen the attendance of Speakers and Presiding Officers of East African Community (EAC) Member States.
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda stressed the importance of infrastructure development in energy and transport, stating that it is crucial for lowering business costs and attracting investment. He emphasized that prioritizing infrastructure builds a strong economic base and opens opportunities in various sectors such as ICT, agriculture, commerce, industry, and services.
Moses Wetang'ula, the National Assembly Speaker of Kenya, echoed these sentiments, calling for Africans to take control of the Africa's destiny. He noted that Africa is rich in resources but has some of the poorest populations, and urged that engineers can transform these resources into projects that improve lives. Wetang'ula also emphasized the importance of regional integration within the EAC.
Uganda's National Assembly Speaker Anita Among echoed the call for an industrial revolution as a pathway to Africa's emancipation. She praised the conference as a source of continental pride and suggested that such forums should rotate across EAC capitals.
The East African Legislative Assembly Speaker, Joseph Ntakirutimana, also praised the conference, stating that it is important to bring young people together, as they are the future of the community. Ntakirutimana suggested that such forums should rotate across EAC capitals.
The conference also announced that the EAC Sports Games will be hosted in Uganda from December 5-17. The East Africa Parliament Secretariat will coordinate the preparations for the games.
Wetang'ula believes that engineers can transform Africa's resources into projects that improve lives. He made these remarks at the conference in Munyonyo, Kampala.
The forum brings together all EAC Member States: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia. The event is an opportunity for these countries to collaborate and discuss ways to move forward in infrastructure development and regional integration.
