"Afghans trapped in Doha, under Taliban threat, plead for assistance"

Amir, a 35-year-old Afghan, is currently residing in Doha, Qatar, on a former US military base that has been converted into a refugee camp called Al Sayliyah. Amir's journey to exile began in January 2021, as he and his family were evacuated due to credible threats to their safety.

Before the Taliban's return to power in the summer of 2021, Amir was working at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and the Ministry of Finance in Afghanistan. However, his work as an economist did not go unnoticed by the Taliban, who want him dead due to his contributions to the country's financial sector.

Fearing expulsion and being sent back to Afghanistan, Amir and his wife founded an NGO called HÁWAR.help in their home country. The focus of this organisation was on education and empowering women, a cause close to their hearts. Through their NGO, they converted the homes of teachers into schools, providing educational opportunities for children and women in the community.

Despite the NGO's noble purpose, it was not based on a former US military base nor was it involved in any known criminal activities. The work of HÁWAR.help was aimed at improving the educational and empowerment opportunities for women in Afghanistan.

Amir's fear of being abandoned if he is expelled and sent back to Afghanistan is not unfounded. The Taliban, known for sowing death and terror, have a history of suppressing women's rights and limiting educational opportunities.

Currently, Amir continues his work in exile, hoping for a day when he can return to his homeland and continue his mission of empowering women and providing quality education to the children of Afghanistan.
