Older couple, allegedly freed by the Taliban, reportedly express desire to return to Afghanistan, according to their legal representative.

In a heartwarming development, the elderly British couple, Barbie Reynolds (76) and Peter Reynolds (80), were released from an Afghan prison after months of captivity. The couple, who have lived in Afghanistan for over five decades, were held by the Taliban following their return to power in August 2021.

The Reynolds, who consider themselves Afghan citizens, have dedicated their lives to the country, running an organization called Rebuild Afghanistan. This humanitarian agency, established in 2009, facilitates education and training programmes for civilians.

The couple's release was facilitated through Qatari mediation, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed relief and praised Qatar's role in securing their freedom. No accusations or charges were reported to have been made against the Reynolds during their detention.

Upon their arrival in Doha, the couple was visibly emotional, being reunited with their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, and other family members. Tatyana Eatwell, a part of the Reynolds' legal team, stated that the couple would like to return to Afghanistan in the future, reflecting their deep love for the country and its people.

Ms. Eatwell also mentioned that Barbie's desire to return to Afghanistan reflects her and her husband's deep connection with the community there. The couple had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades since they were married there in 1970.

The circumstances surrounding their release and their current condition are not provided in the article. It is known that the Reynolds were first arrested while traveling to their home in Bamyan province and were subsequently moved to a maximum security prison in Kabul in March.

Following their release, the couple underwent medical checks before traveling back to the UK. The Taliban stated that the pair had broken Afghan laws and were released after judicial proceedings, but the reason for their detention remains undisclosed.

This news brings a sense of relief and joy to many, as the Reynolds' work in Afghanistan has been widely appreciated. The British government offered to evacuate the Reynolds when the Taliban took over, but they declined, choosing to stay and support the Afghan people in their hour of need.
