In the heart of Paris, a petition calling for a referendum on immigration has stirred up quite a storm. The petition, launched by Philippe de Villiers on September 6, has reportedly surpassed one million signatures, according to its host site, referendum-immigration.com.

The site, however, does not provide a way to view the list of signatories, and neither Philippe de Villiers' assistant, the petition's email address (which could be a gmail, hotmail, or outlook email), the Lagardère group's press services, nor Geoffroy Lejeune, director of publication of Le JDD, have responded to requests regarding the verification of signatories and the use of their data.

The offices of the site, located at 2 rue des Cévennes in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, correspond to the offices of Lagardère News (Europe 1, Le JDD). Philippe de Villiers is a columnist in the JDNews, the magazine supplement of Le JDD.

Internet users are invited to allow their email addresses to be used by Philippe de Villiers and Lagardère Media News when filling out the petition. No confirmation email is received upon signing, and no verification of the real identity of signatories is made. A signatory's email address can only be used once.

The site states that Philippe de Villiers is the data controller. It is not specified whether Philippe de Villiers will use the data for promoting an upcoming book. Fayard, the publishing house, assures that they are not in charge of the petition initiative.

The petition has been discussed in the media outlets "JDD" (Le Journal du Dimanche) and "JDNews," indicating their involvement in publicising or commenting on the petition. It remains unclear how the data collected from the petition will be used and whether it will be kept confidential.

As the petition continues to gain traction, questions about data privacy and the legitimacy of the petition persist, leaving many to wonder about the transparency and intentions behind the initiative.
