AfD Politician Stadler Stripped of Parliamentary Immunity - AfD Politician Stadler Loses Immune privilege from Prosecution
Get the scoop on the latest development in Bavarian politics! Ralf Stadler, an AfD member of the Landtag, has lost his political immunity following a unanimous vote from the Constitutional Committee. Even his fellow AfD members agreed, with no opposing votes or abstentions. This move clears the way for the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office to probe the matter. As of yet, the Prosecutor's Office has remained tight-lipped about the allegations against Stadler [1].
Stadler spoke up about the cause behind the controversy, citing some of his social media activities as the root of the issue. He claimed that he shared a post on social media featuring a Ukrainian citizen disclosing her connections, which he insists isn't a legal breach. The woman, he argued, made the information public herself [2].
Stadler has previously grabbed headlines for statements deemed borderline racist by other politicians. In 2018, his immunity was already revoked once due to a doctored photo with Landtag President Ilse Aigner (CSU), for which he was slapped with a penalty order of 60 days [2]. His firearms license was taken away at the time, an appeal against which was unsuccessful. Stadler has received numerous admonishments from the Landtag presidency for disruptive behavior [2].
Political immunity is a protective mechanism that shields parliamentarians from criminal prosecution. This system allows elected officials to carry out their duties without fear of legal repercussions during their term. Once their term ends, however, immunity is no longer in effect, or can be revoked by a decision of the parliament, as happened with Stadler [3].
