AfD board: state association should kick Halemba out of party

The AfD party leadership is distancing itself from Bavarian MP Daniel Halemba, accusations of incitement loom over him. The 22-year-old parliamentarian finds himself entangled in a web of controversy, with the federal executive committee urging the Bavarian AfD state executive committee to expel him.

Alice Weidel, the AfD's party and parliamentary group leader in Berlin, delivered a scathing statement, calling for immediate revocation of Halemba's membership rights. Weidel, appearing in Berlin, expressed her disapproval unequivocally, stating that the decision to expel Halemba was not just a party matter but a unanimous and absolute necessity for the AfD.

The reasons for such a drastic measure are manifold. Starting from party rule violations that led to the admission of members against party statutes during the run-up to two constituency meetings for the state elections in Bavaria, the list goes on to include the use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations in the "Prager Burschenschaft Teutonia zu Würzburg," a fraternity Halemba is part of.

The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been keeping tabs on the fraternity, and Halemba's affiliation with it added to the gravity of the situation. A guestbook confiscated from the fraternity house during a raid in September contained an entry signed by Halemba, saying "Sieg Heil." In addition, a Nazi-era SS order with a double sigrune was discovered in Halemba's room.

Würzburg's public prosecutor's office is currently investigating Halemba for incitement of the people and the use of symbols of anti-constitutional organizations. Unsurprisingly, Halemba, a 22-year-old student, rejects the accusations.

In response to the Berlin request, the Bavarian state executive refused to comment initially. They later clarified that the case would be discussed during the state executive committee meeting on Thursday.

It appears that Halemba and his actions are now under the spotlight, with controversy surrounding him and the future of his parliamentary career hanging in the balance. The investigation and subsequent developments suggest that the case will unfold against the backdrop of growing concerns about extremist activities within political parties in Germany.
