Aerial Tensions Flare Up in the Skies Over the Baltic, As Indicated by Russian Aircraft
In a series of events, NATO allies are scheduled to discuss an airspace violation reported by Estonia involving Russian fighter jets. The violation, which lasted about twelve minutes, occurred when Russian jets flew about ten kilometers deep into Estonian airspace, according to the Defense Ministry in Tallinn. The jets did not follow the narrow international corridor over the Gulf of Finland.
The flight route of the Russian aircraft, as depicted by the Defense Ministry in Tallinn, went in a straight line along the Estonian Baltic Sea coast. Moscow, however, denies any airspace violation, claiming the flight was conducted in strict compliance with international airspace rules. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the MiG-31 jets did not deviate from the agreed flight route.
Talk of provocations is increasing among NATO allies due to the Russian airspace violations. The attack on Ukraine is causing unrest among NATO allies in Europe. Overnight on Saturday, Russia launched another massive aerial attack on Ukraine, resulting in at least three deaths and dozens of injuries.
In response to these attacks, the Polish and NATO combat aircraft are responding, with the Polish army taking off combat aircraft due to the attacks on Ukraine in the border area. Poland also reported a violation of a safety zone above a Polish drilling rig in the Baltic Sea by two Russian fighter jets. As a result, ground-based air defense in Poland has been put on "highest alert."
The discussions will take place under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which calls for consultations with allies if a NATO country feels threatened from the outside. The NATO countries participating in the consultations on the Russian airspace violation reported by Estonia early next week will include all NATO members. Poland, having reported a related incident, is also involved.
In addition, Poland and Romania are to be equipped with and trained on the Turkish air surveillance system "Merops." This system is expected to enhance the countries' ability to monitor and respond to potential threats in their airspace.
Estonia requested consultations after three Russian combat aircraft allegedly entered the airspace of the EU and NATO country without permission. The Russian jets were eventually escorted out of the airspace by NATO fighter jets from Italy. The Polish army regularly reacts in this way when Russia attacks Ukrainian territories near the Polish border.
