A 26-year-old tourist from Saxony-Anhalt suffered an injury while hiking at Pfaffenstein in Saxon Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at a popular spot known as the Needle's Eye.

The tourist sustained an injury to his leg, which required immediate attention. Fortunately, the mountain warden was on duty nearby and quickly alerted the alarm group in Bad Schandau. Six rescuers rushed to the scene, accompanied by an on-site doctor and the rescue helicopter Christoph 62.

The rescue operation involved the use of a winch from the rescue helicopter, which was necessary due to the steep and challenging terrain. The tourist was stabilised on-site before being airlifted to a nearby clinic for further treatment.

It's important to note that hiking at Pfaffenstein, especially for inexperienced tourists, requires careful planning and adherence to safety measures. The Pfaffenstein loop involves climbing steep stairs and ladders to reach viewpoints, and the terrain includes cliffs and narrow ledges.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable hike, it's recommended to wear sturdy footwear with good grip, plan your hike during daylight and good weather, stay on marked trails, carry sufficient water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing, avoid hiking alone if inexperienced, and use caution when taking photos near cliff edges or rock formations.

Checking local visitor information beforehand is also advisable, as Saxon Switzerland is a national park with protected landscapes and sometimes trail restrictions. By following these precautions, inexperienced hikers can enjoy the dramatic views safely on the short but physically demanding Pfaffenstein trail.
