Aerial attack inflicted by Israel results in the death of journalist Anas Al-Sharif, a Palestinian national.
In a tragic turn of events, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a press tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on October 10, 2023. Al-Sharif, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, was known for his courageous and committed reporting on the harsh realities in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Born in Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, Al-Sharif studied media at al Aqsa University and had become a prominent and recognizable journalist within Gaza. His last broadcast for Al Jazeera focused on children suffering from Israel’s starvation policy and showed harrowing scenes from a Gaza City hospital. Minutes before his death, he posted a brief video clip of intense Israeli bombardment captioned, “Relentless bombardment… For two hours the Israeli aggression has intensified on Gaza City.” He had also documented airstrikes on homes shortly before being killed.
Anas Al-Sharif was not just a journalist but also a director at Al-Shifa Medical hospital in Gaza. In his role, he had a first-hand view of the devastating impact of the conflict on the civilian population. He publicly accused the Israeli forces of genocide and urged for help to stop the massacre.
His colleague, Mohammed Qreiqe, was also killed alongside Al-Sharif in the same airstrike. While details about Qreiqe’s background and last messages are less documented individually, he was recognized as part of the brave journalistic team that risked and ultimately lost their lives to report on the conflict.
In his final messages, Al-Sharif warned of a potential full-scale invasion of Gaza by the Israeli forces and implied that the international community is complicit in the ongoing conflict due to their silence. He urged his followers to share his message and tag everyone who has the power to help end the conflict.
