In a series of diplomatic meetings, the United States and Russia have been engaging in discussions about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These talks took place in Istanbul in February and April this year.

The aim of these discussions, as stated by senior diplomats, was to clear up irritants in their relations and explore possibilities for easing tensions. However, it's important to note that these talks have not resulted in an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.

Moscow's settlement demands for Ukraine include a ban on joining military alliances and troop withdrawal from occupied regions. Kyiv, on the other hand, considers these demands as an "ultimatum" and ties them to ceasefire conditions for talks.

Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine continues to take a toll on civilian areas. On Tuesday, a residential building in Kharkiv's Slobidskyi district was struck by a Russian drone. Authorities are currently searching for possible casualties, and air raid warnings have been urged for residents in Kharkiv.

The attack was captured on video and shared by local officials, marking another instance of civilian infrastructure being targeted in the conflict. Kharkiv, one of the most targeted Ukrainian cities, has been under repeated Russian strikes using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Looking ahead, both the U.S. and Russia have expressed optimism about the progress made during the talks. Russia is hoping for a new round of talks with U.S. representatives this autumn.

In addition to the recent talks, notable meetings have taken place between U.S. and Russian representatives aimed at resolving the conflict. These include meetings between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Senator Marco Rubio, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and former President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Notable meetings occurred in Riyadh in February 2025 and Alaska in August 2025.

Despite these efforts, the conflict in Ukraine continues to be a significant source of tension between the U.S. and Russia. The international community continues to watch these developments closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
