Aerial assault in Atbara, Sudan results in the deaths of twelve individuals
The conflict between Sudan's regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues unabated, with no decisive victory for either side. The latest development in this violent standoff is a series of drone attacks, including one that targeted Atbara city in northeast Sudan.
On Tuesday, a drone attack occurred during the evening fast-breaking meal (Iftar) in Ramadan, marking a disturbing escalation in the conflict. The incident, which took place around 300km northeast of Khartoum, resulted in 12 deaths and 30 injuries. The target of the attack was a lunch organized by and at the base of the Islamist Baraa militia.
The RSF, who own drones, are positioned about 250 miles away from Atbara. Despite this distance, the drone attack was carried out, causing a wave of panic among residents in the city.
This attack is part of a broader trend of drone strikes on army-controlled territories by the RSF. For instance, in August 2025, the RSF carried out a rare drone strike targeting the fuel storage area at Kassala airport near the Eritrean border in eastern Sudan, an area held by the regular army.
The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), holds most of Darfur in the west and parts of southern Sudan, while the regular army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, controls central, eastern, and northern Sudan. The RSF has declared a parallel Government of Peace and Unity to administer areas under its control as of April 2025.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced over 8.5 million people. According to the new US ambassador for Sudan, Tom Perriello, both the military and the RSF are obstructing humanitarian assistance and the free movement of civilians throughout the country.
Amid this acute humanitarian emergency, civilians continue to bear the worst impact. The conflict, along with the increasing use of drones to disrupt supply lines and infrastructure, is exacerbating civilian suffering. Millions are displaced, facing hunger and disease, with many cities devastated by warfare.
In other developments, military jets assaulted the city of El-Fasher in North Darfur on Monday, where thousands of civilians from across Darfur had already fled. The incident sparked a wave of panic among residents.
It is important to note that no group has yet claimed responsibility for the drone attack in Atbara. The conflict in Sudan remains a complex and evolving situation, with serious implications for the region's stability and the well-being of its people.
