Time for Voigt to Stand Up for Maja T.: A Call to Action from the Thuringian Left
Linde recommends Voigt to support Maja T's cause - Advocating for Maja T.: Voigt's Support
Fire up, Voigt! The Thuringian Left is urging Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU) to take a stand for Maja T., a resident from Jena currently jailed in Hungary. If Voigt truly intends to be a Minister President for all Thuringians, he's gotta step up now and publicly advocate for better jail conditions and work towards Maja T.'s transfer to Germany, asserts Left Party legislator Katharina König-Preuss.
Left-Wing Allegations
The Hungarian prosecutors have accused Maja T., who identifies as non-binary, of orchestrating attacks on real and perceived right-wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023; they claim Maja T. was partially responsible for severe physical harm inflicted on the victims.
The indictment lists some serious injuries: broken fingers and facial bones, lacerations, and a concussion. Fortunately, the injuries weren't life-threatening - but only by chance.
On February 11, 1945, the Wehrmacht's last-ditch effort to break out of Budapest, encircled by the Red Army, was the focus of Hungary's right-wing extremists, whom they call the "Day of Honor."
The Hunger Strike
Maja T. is planning to starts a hunger strike to protest her imprisonment in Hungary. "I'm being buried alive in Hungary," Maja T. wrote. This hunger strike is a last-ditch effort to experience a fair trial and to be sent back to Germany. If you recall, "tagesschau.de" previously reported on the hunger strike announcement.
In December 2023, Maja T. was arrested in Berlin and extradited to Hungary in June 2024, despite the Federal Constitutional Court banning it. Sadly, the ruling from Karlsruhe arrived a few minutes too late.
Inhumane Solitary Confinement
Maja T. criticizes being placed in solitary confinement under unbearable conditions. Initial reports noted sleep deprivation due to frequent checks every hour and unsanitary conditions. Moreover, some trial documents weren't translated into German.
König-Preuss commented: "Voigt and Justice Minister Meißner must utilize all available diplomatic channels to pressure the Hungarian authorities and make it unequivocally clear that human rights are inalienable, and the rule of law must be preserved."
