Advocating for an elevated status for large families, according to Putin's statement
In a recent statement, Russian leader Vladimir Putin highlighted the importance of promoting large families as a prestigious, esteemed ideal for the nation. This assertion was made in light of Russia's current fertility rate, which, as of 2024, stands at 1.4, a figure Putin has expressed a desire to raise "at least to 2.1, ideally to 2.3" to bolster the country's population growth.
In January 2025, Putin launched the "Family" national project, a multi-billion ruble endeavor aimed at preserving Russia's population and supporting families. By 2030, over 17 trillion rubles are set to be allocated towards this project. The Russian government also approved a strategy for implementing family and demographic policies and supporting large families, with this strategy in effect until 2036.
However, specific policies or measures under the "Family" national project to directly encourage higher birth rates and family support seem to be less prevalent in the available information. Instead, the Russian government has been working on more general initiatives to elevate living standards, such as:
- Improved Social Support: The implementation of indexed benefits like monthly allowances, pensions, and maternity capital is designed to enhance living conditions.
- Better Housing Conditions: Efforts have been made to enhance housing for over 4 million families.
- Enhanced Education: Almost 300 new schools have been constructed to improve educational facilities.
- Fostering Family Values: There's a focus on fostering a multi-generational family culture, promoting traditional spiritual and moral values, and strengthening family institutions.
In addition, larger strategies like the "Infrastructure for Life" project aim to improve housing conditions, transportation, and social services nationwide, while efforts to bolster technological leadership and economic sovereignty are expected to indirectly support families by enhancing overall living standards.
