Advocates for Growth, but Not Indiscriminate Expansion: Stewart Johnston's Viewpoint
Canadian Football League Commissioner Stewart Johnston voices support for potential expansion, although he emphasizes that it will be organic rather than a league-driven initiative.
Speaking at a press conference before the Montreal Alouettes' preseason game against the Ottawa Redblacks, Johnston, appointed to his position a month ago, expressed his openness to increasing the league's current nine teams.
"Would I like the CFL to have a 10th team? Absolutely! Would I like an 11th and 12th team? Yes," Johnston said, adding that the league's financial health and current market structure are key considerations.
The commissioner indicated that any expansion would only occur if a group presents a compelling plan, including a viable market, financial structure, stadium plans, and political support. For now, the league is "more in listen mode than in search mode."
Discussing the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Johnston expressed his excitement about the prospect of CFL players participating. The NFL has approved the participation of its players in the Games, marking the first time flag football will be contested.
Johnston acknowledged that adjusting the CFL schedule around the Olympics, which will take place from July 14 to 30, would be a challenge. However, he noted that the league has three years to find a solution.
In terms of potential expansion beyond its current markets, Johnston noted that growth and rejuvenation of the league's audience are his main missions. He expressed his desire to see players from the league participate in the Olympics in 2028.
Expansion in professional sports leagues often hinges on factors such as market demand, financial viability, competitive balance, and infrastructure. While no specific plans for expansion have been announced, historically, potential sites have included cities like Quebec City and Halifax.
