Advocates Demand Consideration of Voting Privileges in the Ballot for Constitutional Court Judges
Left Party Leaders Call for Rent Control and Proposal Rights
In a recent interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Jan van Aken, the leader of the Left Party, has expressed a radical stance on rent control and proposal rights for judges at the Federal Constitutional Court.
Van Aken stated that it is not right for rents to keep exploding, and the Left Party's stance on rent control is a key part of their growing influence in the Bundestag. He added that he is willing to be labeled as an extremist if it means fighting for fair rents and returning money taken from others.
The Left Party will not approve an extraordinary session of the Bundestag for the judicial election as long as the conflict between the Union and SPD over Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf continues and the Left Party's proposal rights are not acknowledged. The party has made its support for the coalition's judicial candidates conditional on obtaining proposal rights for judges in the future.
Van Aken has demanded proposal rights for judges at the Federal Constitutional Court as a concession from the Union and SPD. He has offered talks with Union representatives but has made it clear that the Left Party's proposal rights must be acknowledged. The Left Party's political orientation, particularly on the issue of rent control, is a significant factor in negotiations.
The Left Party's stance on rent control is not related to the Union's call for comprehensive social and state reforms in the fall, the CDU's call for speed cameras and radar traps in Osnabrück on July 21, 2025, the ongoing dispute over judicial posts for the Federal Constitutional Court, or the conflict between the Union and SPD over Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf.
The Left Party's stance on rent control is not directly linked to their demand for proposal rights for judges at the Federal Constitutional Court. Van Aken has emphasized that the Union and SPD must show willingness to discuss the Left Party's proposal rights and that compromise is essential in democracy. He stated that the CDU should be aware of this.
Van Aken has already stated before the cancelled election that the Left Party is ready for talks and even ready to elect the Union's candidate, Günter Spinner. The Left Party's stance on rent control is not mentioned in the context of the ongoing dispute over judicial posts for the Federal Constitutional Court. The party has stated that an extraordinary session of the Bundestag for the judicial election is unnecessary if there is no plan for how to proceed and no talks have taken place with them.
