Advocacy by Jennifer Jones Austin on combating poverty and its effects, particularly in racial minority communities
In the heart of New York City, the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA) is working tirelessly to combat poverty and promote economic security for its residents.
Established over seven decades ago, FPWA has historically been dedicated to addressing the disproportionate impact of poverty on communities of colour. Today, the organisation continues to champion this cause, but with a new primary goal: moving from basic subsistence to economic security.
FPWA's Executive Director and CEO, Jennifer Jones Austin, will be delivering a keynote speech at City & State's "Economic & Workforce Development Summit" on Thursday, underscoring the organisation's commitment to this mission.
To achieve this goal, FPWA is employing a measure that determines what it costs to get ahead and stay ahead in New York City. This data-driven approach informs policies related to workforce, housing, and childcare for struggling individuals.
The city has made strides in ensuring childcare for families with young children and affordable housing. However, FPWA emphasises that more needs to be done to ensure these solutions don't inadvertently exacerbate the problem and help low- and middle-income New Yorkers save and thrive.
One of the biggest challenges in New York City for people trying to lift themselves out of poverty is the focus on basic needs and subsistence, rather than planning for the future. To address this, FPWA is advocating for increased affordable housing, expanded access to healthcare, improved food security programs, and enhanced workforce development initiatives.
FPWA's focus includes raising wages, ending wage segregation, enforcing pay equity, establishing accurate poverty measures, and dismantling unjust systems. The organisation's mission is to support New Yorkers living in poverty by advocating for policies and initiatives that foster a more equitable city.
FPWA was formerly known as the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, but today, it stands as a beacon of hope for those seeking a path out of poverty and towards economic security in New York City.
