Meet Tom Bedecarre, renowned pioneer at the nexus of advertising and technology, who recently left us at the age of 69.

Tom's professional journey spanned more than three and a half decades, marking him as a trailblazer in the digital realm. As one of the leaders of the foremost digital agencies from 2001 to 2016, Tom's influence stretched far and wide.

Hailing from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Tom kickstarted his career in New York City with Ogilvy & Mather in 1981 as an assistant account executive. In the same decade, his drive propelled him to San Francisco, aligning himself with the burgeoning Silicon Valley, and eventually rising to executive roles at Hal Riney & Partners.

In 1990, Tom set off to found Atlas Citron Haligman & Bedecarré, later known as Citron Haligman Bedecarré (CHB), one of the leading agencies serving technology companies during the dotcom boom.

His entrepreneurial spirit led to the co-founding of AKQA with Ajaz Ahmed in 2001, where he catalyzed global expansion, making AKQA the first agency to operate as a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in China in 2006. By integrating social media and digital campaigns, AKQA emerged as an early advocate in the digital marketing sphere.

2012 saw WPP, one of the largest communications conglomerates, acquiring AKQA in one of the notable digital agency acquisitions of the time. As a result, Tom claimed the positions of chairman at AKQA and president of WPP Ventures, with Ajaz assuming the role of CEO. Under Tom's guidance, AKQA amassed over 600 awards and featured on Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies list for four consecutive years, in addition to earning him the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year title in 2013.

Post-retirement from AKQA in 2016, Tom embarked on public speaking, lecturing, and mentoring roles at Stanford University, becoming a board member and advisor at start-ups like Kate Farms, Viralspace.ai, and served as president of the Innovation Lions Jury at the Cannes Lions festival in 2014.

Antonio Lucio, former global CMO of Facebook, encapsulated Tom's impact as, "an influential leader, savvy entrepreneur, business visionary, and all-around good person". AKQA, in a statement, expressed, "Tom has created an enduring legacy that will inspire future generations of advertising."

It's worth mentioning that earlier reports erroneously stated Tom's age as 70; this article has been corrected to reflect an accurate age of 69.
