Fresh Take:
Dr. Stephan Keller, the spirited mayor of Düsseldorf, recently cemented the city's bond with Chernivtsi in Ukraine. At the helm of Chernivtsi's Mayor Roman Klitschuk, Keller declared, "At last, we've officially solidified our living partnership between Düsseldorf and Chernivtsi. This newly installed sign serves as another tangible symbol of the warm rapport and close bond between our two cities, especially during these hard times when Ukraine is under siege by an aggressive war.
In tribute to the alliance, a sign was also hoisted at Lütticher/Niederkasseler Kirchweg. These signs, positioned chronologically from the eldest partner city to the newest, now boast Chernivtsi's name proudly. The spot once occupied by the Moscow sign remains vacant.
For years, Düsseldorf and Chernivtsi have been intertwined through fruitful exchanges, as confirmed by the city. The city's local Jewish community, too, retains close ties, particularly with Chernivtsi's Museum of Jewish History and Culture of Bukovina. In the wake of the Russian assault on Ukraine that began in March, the council unanimously embraced a city partnership without hesitation.
The cultural union between the two cities was kick-started on June 28 with a show by the Chernivtsi Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Tonhalle and the Robert Schumann Hall. Since then, tens of thousands of refugees have flocked to the region surrounding Chernivtsi, fleeing war-torn zones in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Feeding and housing these displaced people has become a daunting challenge for the city, according to officials. With the combined efforts of citizens, nonprofits, and Düsseldorf companies, substantial aid has already been dispatched.
