Advent calendars cost far more per gram than regular chocolate

A new analysis reveals that many chocolate Advent calendars cost far more per gram than the same products sold year-round. Some brands charge over twice as much for the festive versions. The findings highlight how holiday packaging can drive up prices for consumers.

Out of 16 Advent calendars examined, nine had chocolate priced at least double the standard rate. For example, the Küfferle Katzenzungen Advent calendar sells for €12.99 per 100 grams, working out to €129.90 per kilo. A regular pack of Katzenzungen, by comparison, costs just €3.99 for the same weight, or €53.20 per kilo.

The study shows that festive branding often inflates prices, though exceptions exist. Buyers can save by comparing options or creating homemade alternatives. The findings also draw attention to the environmental impact of single-use Advent calendar packaging.
