Advancing ocean destroys two homes in Finistère region
In the heart of a coastal community, thescene was somber as the wrecking ball took down two homes, swept away by the relentless ocean on June 6, in Treffiagat, Finistère. "It's heartbreaking, like witnessing your life crumble before your eyes," exclaimed a local resident. Seven homes in total will face the wrecking ball, those closest to the water's edge. The rock wall, designed to shield the village, fell short. It requires constant upkeep, costing a hefty 100,000 euros per year.
Time for Some Serious Defenses
The local authority and the State had their wallets out, shelling out 3 million euros for the homes that had to be demolished. Treffiagat isn't ready to throw in the towel yet. After the seven houses are torn down, the rock barrier facing the ocean will join them, making way for a new line of defense. According to journalist Thomas Paga, the community of communes plans to erect two sea walls, spanning 600 and 800 meters, to safeguard 360 homes for the next half century.
