In the vibrant city of Winnipeg, a 14-year-old named Vlad Kovalenko has captured the hearts of many. A recent winner of a Sea Bears prize pack, Vlad's story is one of resilience, passion, and a deep-rooted connection to his homeland, Ukraine.

Vlad, who came to Manitoba as a newcomer, has found solace and friendship at the Ukrainian Youth Association (UYA), where he attends regularly. Counsellor Nikolas Barrett, who works at the UYA, has noticed Vlad's impact on the younger kids. He's become a role model, his passion for basketball and unwavering spirit inspiring those around him.

Vlad's love for basketball began at the tender age of seven, and it has been a lifelong passion ever since. He first experienced the thrill of the game when he picked up a ball for the first time. Since then, he's been an avid fan, predicting a Sea Bears win in their upcoming match against the Calgary Surge on Friday.

The landscape of Winnipeg, with its wide open spaces and friendly community, reminds Vlad of Ukraine. This sense of familiarity, coupled with the support he's found at the UYA, has made Winnipeg feel like home.

Nikolas Barrett finds it rewarding to see newcomers like Vlad recognise the support they have in Winnipeg and Manitoba. He believes that it's calming and settling for newcomers to see this support, especially given the current global situation in Ukraine.

Despite the challenges he's faced, Vlad remains optimistic. He considers his father, who remains in Ukraine fighting in the war, a hero. He is in contact with his father daily, their bond unbroken by the miles that separate them.

Vlad's dream came true earlier this month when he attended his first-ever Sea Bears game. The opportunity to be courtside and see his favourite basketball players play was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Now, with the prize pack, he's excited about the opportunity to see his basketball heroes up close and personal.

Vlad was nominated for the prize by a counsellor at a local youth group, a testament to the impact he's made in such a short time. His story is one of hope, resilience, and the power of sport to bring people together. It's a story that resonates not just in Winnipeg, but across the globe.
