Chatting About FC Porto's Struggles and Coach's Decisions

In the midst of prepping for the FIFA Club World Cup, FC Porto's recent friendly match against Wydad Casablanca in Morocco left fans less than impressed. Despite scoring the only goal of the game, Porto's overall performance left much to be desired, and many have taken to social media to voice their concerns, particularly about the team's tactics.

Enter Rui Quinta, a coach with a history at FC Porto. Quinta shared his thoughts on the situation when asked if head coach Martin Anselmi should hold onto his current three-center-back system or switch back to the team's previous setup. Quinta emphasized the importance of sticking to one's principles and helping players understand them.

"I think, as a coach, you have to be faithful to your ideas. You have to build things according to your perceptions, your beliefs. The coach has shown consistency in relation to his ideas and how he wants them to be defended by the players. Sometimes, this takes time. And maybe that's why he was hired, because people believed in the ideas he presented," Quinta explained.

With a full preseason coming up and the Club World Cup in between, Quinta doesn't doubt that the team and players will eventually be able to put into practice the ideas that Anselmi has in mind. However, he warns against coaches being influenced by public opinion. "I think that's a bad principle. The coach must be faithful to his convictions, to his ideas. That's the art of all coaches."

As for the current situation at FC Porto, the team has experienced some struggles since adopting the 3-4-3 system under Anselmi. Key players like Nico González and Galeno have also departed from the squad, which might affect the team's ability to effectively utilize the 3-4-3 system. Anselmi needs to carefully consider whether the benefits of maintaining the current system outweigh the potential gains from switching back to the previous setup. Ultimately, the decision should be based on a thorough analysis of the team's strengths, weaknesses, and available personnel, with the goal of improving team performance.
