Ademola Lookman joins Atlético Madrid in a €40 million winter transfer coup

Ademola Lookman has completed a high-profile move to Atlético Madrid during the winter 2025/26 transfer window. The Nigerian forward leaves Atalanta after a successful three-and-a-half-year spell, turning down a more lucrative offer from Fenerbahçe to join the Spanish side. His transfer follows intense persuasion from Atlético manager Diego Simeone, who played a key role in securing the deal.

Lookman first joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022 for a fee close to €11 million. His time in Italy proved transformative, with his market value soaring from around €18 million at the time of signing to over €50 million by late 2024. A standout moment came in June 2024 when his hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen propelled his valuation to a peak of €60 million. Strong performances, including 55 goals and 27 assists in 137 appearances, along with consistent interest from top clubs like Arsenal, cemented his reputation as a rising star.

Atlético Madrid finalised the deal with Atalanta for a base fee of €35 million, with an additional €5 million in potential bonuses, bringing the total to around €40 million. The 27-year-old has now signed a five-year contract, earning an annual salary of approximately €6 million. His medical examination in the Spanish capital is scheduled, and an official announcement from the club is expected shortly.

Despite Fenerbahçe offering a more financially rewarding package, Lookman prioritised the opportunity to work under Simeone. The Argentine coach's influence was decisive in convincing the player to choose Atlético over other suitors.

Lookman's arrival strengthens Atlético Madrid's attacking options for the remainder of the 2025/26 season and beyond. The five-year deal reflects the club's long-term commitment to the player, whose experience in European competitions and proven goal-scoring record will be vital. His decision to reject a higher-paying move underscores the appeal of Simeone's project and Atlético's ambitions in both La Liga and continental tournaments.
