Discoveries from the past resurfaced in modern-day Kiel, Germany, as authorities uncovered two World War II aerial bombs during an exploration in Meimersdorf and Ellerbek-Wellingdorf districts. This revelation led to the evacuation of 1,350 residents and disruptions to daily life.

Leaving Homes for Safety's Sake

  • Meimersdorf Evacuation: Approximately three dozen residents in this district were asked to vacate their homes from early morning until 8:00 AM. Road closures and a halt in train services between Kiel and Hamburg followed. Those affected can find temporary shelter at the voluntary fire brigade's rooms on the village square.
  • Ellerbek-Wellingdorf Evacuation: Around 1,300 residents were required to leave their homes and allotment gardens within the secured area by noon. The Stadtrat-Hahn-Park will also be off-limits, with road closures implemented by police. Assistance is available for those in need at the Ellerbek School (Klausdorfer Weg 62-64) from 11:00 AM onwards.

Deadly Devices from the War

The first bomb, a 250 kg American ordnance with two fuses, lay buried on an agricultural field. Due to its well-preserved condition, the bomb disposal team expects the defusing process to proceed smoothly. Meanwhile, the second bomb, another 250 kg British explosive discovered on a property near the southern end of the Stadtrat-Hahn-Park, is expected to yield similar results in the planned defusing operation.

The Lasting Legacy of World War II

The ongoing presence of unexploded ordnance reminds us of the horrors of the past. In Kiel, these scars still linger, with shipbuilding and repair facilities making it a significant target during WWII. This incident underscores the importance of being cautious and meticulous when dealing with remnants from the war.

  1. The community policy in Meimersdorf dictates that residents need to evacuate their homes from early morning until 8:00 AM during the defusing process of an unearthed World War II bomb.
  2. The employment policy in Ellerbek-Wellingdorf requires around 1,300 residents to leave their homes and allotment gardens by noon due to the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb.
  3. Kiel's politics and general news have been dominated by the unearthing of two World War II bombs, with evacuation measures and road closures affecting thousands of residents and disrupting daily life.
  4. The surplus of unexploded ordnance found during war-and-conflicts, like the ones recently found in Kiel, serves as a stark reminder of the lasting legacy of World War II.
