Petrol Prices Plummeting in Germany, Thanks to Crude Oil Slump
Fuel prices in Germany are on a downward spiral, following the falling trend in crude oil prices. According to ADAC, diesel is now as affordable as it was in July, while petrol has even dropped to its lowest level since mid-January. This week alone, the price of a liter of Super E10 and diesel decreased by about 2 cents each, making it cost an average of 1.73 euros and 1.715 euros respectively at German filling stations.
The main catalyst behind these declining fuel prices is the continuous drop in crude oil prices. With North Sea Brent crude priced at 76 US dollars per barrel – its lowest rate since July – doubts about OPEC's production reduction plan and anticipated boost in supply from non-OPEC countries, such as the USA, are putting pressure on oil prices. Indeed, the American Petroleum Institute reported a surge in oil inventory levels early this week.
While diesel now levies 20 cents less energy tax than petrol, the price difference remains minimal for German consumers due to the growing demand for heating oil, keeping diesel prices relatively high.
ADAC recommends that drivers refuel their vehicles in the evening, between 8pm-10pm or 6pm-7pm, to save a few euros compared to the morning charges.
Additional Insights:
During this oil price decline, earnings in the energy sector have significantly dropped, especially for those heavily dependent on crude oil extraction. However, the fall in fuel prices has offset some of the financial burdens on gasoline and diesel consumers and may stimulate economic growth. Energy policy, geopolitics, stock market volatility, and worldwide economic conditions all play crucial roles in determining oil prices and further influencing fuel prices.
