Actress Olivia Colman Confesses Discomfort with Filming Intimate Scenes, Credits Coordinator's Guidance for Turning the Experience Around
In the ever-evolving world of cinema, the use of intimacy coordinators has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in filming intimate scenes. These professionals help actors feel more comfortable and at ease during intimate scenes, as demonstrated by the experiences of Olivia Colman, a renowned actress known for her roles in shows like The Crown and Heartstopper, as well as movies such as The Favourite.
Colman, who won an Oscar for her role in The Favourite, has shared her feelings about filming intimate scenes on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast. Initially, she admitted to experiencing 'ick giggles' during her role in The Favourite, which included multiple intimate scenes. However, with the help of an intimacy coordinator, she seemed to find comfort and confidence in these intimate situations.
The use of intimacy coordinators has been instrumental in various productions, including movies like Babygirl, shows like Bridgerton and Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and horror movie 28 Years Later. In the latter, the coordinators helped the actors deal with the challenge of running with fake 'genitals'.
Michelle Williams, another notable actress, has emphasised the benefits of using an intimacy coordinator, stating that they help actors give a better performance in intimate scenes, specifically mentioning the improvement in giving a better blow job.
Actors in shows like Bridgerton and Outlander: Blood of My Blood reached a 'controlled uncomfortableness' with intimate scenes under the guidance of intimacy coordinators, ensuring a more authentic portrayal of intimacy on screen.
Colman has praised the help of intimacy coordinators, stating they make actors feel safe and supported during vulnerable moments. This sentiment was echoed by the director of Babygirl, who compared working with intimacy coordinators to working with stunt performers.
Despite the initial discomfort, Colman has embraced the use of intimacy coordinators, proving that with the right support, actors can confidently and comfortably portray intimate scenes on screen. Colman's latest role can be found in the 2025 movie schedule entry, The Roses.
However, not all actors share Colman's enthusiasm for intimate scenes. The actress from Peep Show attempted to remove all intimate scenes from their film, Empire of Light, and does not enjoy performing them.
As the film industry continues to evolve, the role of intimacy coordinators becomes increasingly important in creating a safe and comfortable environment for actors, ensuring that intimate scenes are portrayed authentically and respectfully on screen.
