Malayalam actor-filmmaker Unni Mukundan has found himself embroiled in a legal dispute following an alleged physical and verbal attack on his former manager, Vipin Kumar.
The incident occurred on May 26, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Mukundan. The complaint alleges that Mukundan physically assaulted Kumar during a meeting at his residence, following which Kumar sustained injuries and was hospitalized.
Kumar, who served as Mukundan's manager for six years, stated that the actor confronted him over his disappointment with the industry's response to Mukundan's recent film 'Marco.' According to Kumar, Mukundan believed he had not received the expected attention from leading filmmakers after the film's release.
However, Mukundan has denied the allegations, claiming there was no physical contact beyond breaking Kumar's sunglasses. He attributes the confrontation to rumors spread by Kumar, which he claims were harmful to his reputation and friendship with actor Tovino Thomas.
Mukundan has counterfiled a report against Kumar with the Director-General of Police (DGP). The conflict between the two parties has also led to complaints being filed with film bodies such as FEFKA and AMMA, which are currently attempting to mediate the situation.
This incident comes shortly after Mukundan's resignation as the Treasurer of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) in January, citing mental health concerns and professional workload as the reasons for his departure. The resignation coincided with a period of intense scrutiny for AMMA, following the mass resignation of its 17-member executive committee in August 2024, which was linked to the Justice K. Hema Committee Report on the working conditions in the Malayalam film industry.
