Actor Steven Yeun joins the cast of the animated film based on Avatar: The Last Airbender

In exciting news for fans of the beloved animated series, it has been announced that Steven Yeun will be voicing the iconic character of Zuko in the upcoming animated feature film titled The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

This film, directed by Lauren Montgomery and co-directed by William Mata, is set to continue the story several years after the original series, with Yeun voicing the now-adult version of Zuko, the Fire Lord who was originally Aang’s rival turned ally and fire-bending teacher.

The news of Yeun's casting was broken by Variety, and it was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 by the series creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Yeun's portrayal of Zuko reflects the character's growth as he works to bring order to the Fire Nation and restore its reputation in a new, peaceful era.

Joining Yeun in the voice cast are Eric Nam as Aang, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Jessica Matten as Katara, and Dionne Quan as Toph. The news about Dave Bautista's casting as an as-yet-unnamed villain was reported last year.

The upcoming animated feature film is expected to take place between The Last Airbender and Korra, and is set for release on January 30, 2026. The film is a continuation of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, produced by Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon.

The Avatar franchise has seen a resurgence in popularity due to the upcoming animated series Avatar: Seven Havens on Nickelodeon, the second and third seasons of a live-action series on Netflix, and a trilogy of animated feature films on Nickelodeon.
