Actor Sam Worthington openly discusses the simplicity of remembering the narrative of 'Avatar'
In an exciting development for the sci-fi world, Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis have joined the ensemble cast for James Cameron's upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. This third instalment in the Avatar franchise is set for release on December 19, 2025.
Oona Chaplin will play Varang, the leader of the Ash clan, a new Na'vi tribe residing around volcanoes. Varang is a complex antagonist, hardened by hardship and willing to take drastic measures to protect her people, adding a morally grey character to the narrative beyond the traditional "humans bad, Na'vi good" trope.
David Thewlis, on the other hand, will portray Peylak, the leader of the Wind Traders, another significant group on Pandora. The Wind Traders will play a crucial role in this instalment.
Both actors join the returning core cast, including Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña as Jake Sully and Neytiri. Fire and Ash continues the story shortly after Avatar: The Way of Water, expanding the Na'vi world and clan conflicts.
Actor Sam Worthington, who will reprise his role as Jake Sully, has expressed his admiration for the performances of Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis in the "Avatar" film. He described the acting in "Avatar: Fire and Ash" as requiring a fearless approach.
Worthington also emphasised the unique setup of the "Avatar" filming process, where actors can observe their colleagues from designated seats outside the Volume. He finds this setup incredibly helpful in staying engaged and present during the filming process.
Director James Cameron provides confidence to the actors, raising the bar and enabling them to perform fearlessly. Both Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis quickly adapted to the "Avatar" filming process, seamlessly integrating into the sci-fi franchise.
Sam Worthington, who finds it inspiring that Cameron pushes the boundaries in filmmaking, compares himself and the team to doctors on call for the director. He mentioned that it takes him longer to get into the character of Jake Sully now due to the passage of time since the release of the original "Avatar" film.
"Avatar: Fire and Ash" promises to deepen the franchise’s exploration of Pandora’s cultures and ongoing human-Na'vi conflicts in a richly detailed sci-fi universe. With the addition of Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of this highly anticipated film.
