In the realm of education, the ABC Unified School District (ABCUSD) has cause for celebration, as two of its schools were named as 2020 California Distinguished Schools. This prestigious award recognizes schools for closing the achievement gap and for exceptional student performance.

Announcing the new principal appointments for the 2016-17 school year, Dr. Mary Sieu, Superintendent of ABCUSD, revealed that Pat Walker would continue as Principal of Whitney High School in Cerritos, while John Briquelet would take on the role, commencing in the same school year. Briquelet, a seasoned member of the ABCUSD, had been part of the district prior to his appointment as the Principal of Whitney High School.

Meanwhile, in the political sphere, The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump GOP group, made waves with their Election Day ad. Released prior to the 2020 elections, the ad featured Martin Sheen, famously known for his role in 'The West Wing.' The ad urged voters to take part in 'one last push to get the train back on its tracks,' but did not specify the political stance of the group or the message it aimed to convey beyond saving America. The train metaphor used in the ad remained ambiguous, as it did not provide specific details.

On a separate note, on September 23, 2024, an announcement was made regarding the 2020 California Distinguished Schools. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond honoured 323 elementary schools for outstanding education programs and practices. These schools, like the ones in the ABCUSD, have demonstrated exceptional student performance and have implemented effective programs and practices.

As the academic year progresses and elections unfold, these events serve as a reminder of the dedication and hard work being put forth in both education and politics to ensure a brighter future for all.
