Ain't No Stopping Rami Malek: From Fooling His Agent to Winning an Oscar
Agent Rami Malek Speaks Undercover, Posing as His Own Representative on a Call. - Actor Rami Malek feigned identity as his own agent over the phone.
He's graced our screens as a Bond villain and slayed an Oscar with his performance as Freddie Mercury – Rami Malek's rise to fame is nothing short of remarkable. But even for one of Hollywood's hottest stars, success didn't come easily. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he revealed a little-known tale from his early days in Tinseltown – impersonating his own agent on the phone.
"I knocked on every door I could find, you hear a lot of 'nos,'" Malek, now 43, reminisced about his struggle in LA's Hollywood scene. He sent applications far and wide, to "every agent, every studio, every art school," before he even had an agent to help him out.
Lying His Way into Stardom
Determined to land that coveted audition for "Gilmore Girls," Malek picked up the phone and gave it his best shot. "I said, 'This is him,'" he recalled, when the casting director asked to speak to his agent. When she inquired if Malek was a member of the acting union, he confidently replied, "Not yet, but we'll get him in."
The casting director, seemingly charmed by Malek's audacity, didn't buy his fib, but let it slide, giving him a chance to audition. "It was one of my first real jobs," Malek shared, but the battles for roles didn't stop there.
Breaking Out with "Mr. Robot" and "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Malek broke out in a big way in 2015 with the TV series "Mr. Robot." But it wasn't until his Oscar-winning portrayal of the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody" that he truly solidified his place in Hollywood. Most recently, he made waves as the villainous Safin in the James Bond film "No Time to Die" (2021).
Despite his success, Malek's tale serves as a reminder that even the biggest stars have had to start somewhere, taking risks and seizing opportunities to make their mark in the world of entertainment.
