Actor Mark Hamill, famed for his role in 'Star Wars', disclosed that he contemplated departing the United States following Donald Trump's re-election.
Mark Hamill, the beloved actor known for his iconic roles in "Star Wars" and "Batman," found himself contemplating a move away from America following President Donald Trump's election. In an extensive interview with a British daily newspaper, Hamill candidly discussed the struggles he endured after Trump's victory.
Hamill revealed that he considered relocating to London or Ireland, a decision prompted by the divisive political climate in the U.S. During the same period, several other outspoken liberal actors, including Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres, and Laverne Cox, also considered or decided to emigrate.
However, Hamill eventually decided to stay in the United States. He expressed his support for President Joe Biden and met with the President in the Oval Office in May 2024, accompanied by press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Hamill's liberal rhetoric online has made him a prominent figure in recent years. After disagreements with the leadership of Facebook and Twitter, he decided to express his political views on Bluesky instead.
Despite his outspoken nature, Hamill remains one of America's most popular actors. His wife, however, was surprised that Trump's re-election would force him out of his own country. Hamill now sees the Trump administration's actions as entertaining but also offensive, such as the idea of making Canada a 51st state or renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
The White House spokeswoman responded to a request from our website Digital by saying that Hamill would get to enjoy the many wins President Trump is securing for the American people. She compared Hamill to Rosie O'Donnell in her response.
Hamill, however, would move back to England if he didn't believe there were more honest, decent people than the MAGA crowd. He also supported Kamala Harris as Biden's successor for the Democratic Party's nomination.
Harrison Ford, another prominent actor, lamented the widening gap between the rich and the poor during his critique of the Trump presidency. Hamill's wife had suggested London or Ireland as options for moving due to Trump's re-election, but Hamill ultimately chose to stay.
This trend of liberal celebrities seeking residence abroad as a response to domestic political developments became more prominent both after the 2016 and again following the 2024 elections. It reflects dissatisfaction with the Trump administration's policies and the broader political environment in the U.S.
