He explains, "It's about standing for a community of people who don't have many resources, who aren't protected, and are rejected – people who feel the harshest side of our humanity. Some of them don't make it."

However, he does share a positive note, emphasizing the responsibilities of raising a teenager. He laughs, "Teenagers give you a headache – they're difficult, whether they're trans or not. You'll get through it. Kai, for example, is as spirited and direct as you can imagine."
