John Malkovich Steps onto the Berlin Stage

desired destination—even for a Hollywood heavyweight like John Malkovich (71, "Dangerous Liaisons").

Catch Malkovich live on stage from June 9th to 11th, each evening at 8 PM, at the prestigious Admiralspalast. Sharing the spotlight with the Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė (62, "Seven Days in Tibet") in the two-person play "In the Solitude of Cotton Fields" by Bernard-Marie Koltès (1948-1989), this unique theatrical experience is a must-see. In an exclusive interview with B.Z., both artists share their insights.

The Path to Berlin

John Malkovich: We'd already been rehearsing for the play via Zoom during the pandemic. We'd planned a European tour, with the premiere set in Riga in 2022, followed by Sofia, Hamburg, Athens, and now Berlin.

Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė: Director Timofey Kulyabin and dramaturg Roman Dolzhanskiy were eager to work with us, but it took some effort to bring it all together. In time, though, we all became enamored of the play.

The Story Unfolds

Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė: It revolves around a salesman peddling forbidden desires and a buyer craving them. Neither party is willing to acknowledge their desires upfront.

John Malkovich: The audience remains clueless about the salesman's product and the buyer's needs. The play explores power dynamics, how they shift, and leaves interpretation to the audience.

The Power of Trust

John Malkovich: We've been working together since 1992, and Inga is my closest and most dependable colleague.

Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė: I owe John the same trust. It's only when you look back that you realize this partnership is a source of happiness.

The Tale of Two Mediums

John Malkovich: The stage and screen are vastly different. In the theater, we must craft something alive every night to cater to a new audience. Film, in contrast, is a fixed medium, edited to perfection and unchangeable.

The Theater's Heartbeat

John Malkovich: Performing live on stage feels organic; it's where my true passion lies. Even if I earn more as a film actor, my foundation lies in theater.

An Eager Embrace—Berlin

Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė: Although I've visited Berlin several times, I'll be making my stage debut here.

John Malkovich: I've graced the Berlin stage on multiple occasions, most recently with "The Infernal Comedy" at the Philharmonie in 2012 and "Report on the Blind" at the Konzerthaus in 2015. Our current tour includes stops in Toruń, Poland, Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Prague.

Offstage Adventures

John Malkovich: With limited free time, I aim to catch up with friends—reconnecting with Volker Schlöndorff, and perhaps watching Lilith Stangenberg perform on the night of our show.

"In the Solitude of Cotton Fields" (in English with German subtitles) on June 9th, 10th, and 11th at the Admiralspalast, tickets are still available (Eventim), starting at 100 Euro.
