Actor Jesse Plemons Signs up for The Hunger Games: Sunrise during the Selection Process
In a significant casting update for the upcoming prequel film to the Hunger Games series, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, Jesse Plemons has been selected to portray the character of Plutarch Heavensbee. This role was previously brought to life by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the original movie franchise.
Known for his roles in critically acclaimed projects such as Breaking Bad and Fargo, Plemons is set to bring his own unique interpretation to the character while paying tribute to Hoffman's memorable performance.
In the prequel, set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, Plutarch Heavensbee was a young District 12 resident working as a cameraman. He occasionally encourages the character Haymitch Abernathy to survive the bloody competition.
Earlier this week, Lionsgate announced Joseph Zada as the young Haymitch, Whitney Peak as his love Lenore Baird, and McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.
The announcement for Sunrise on the Reaping was made alongside the release of Suzanne Collins' book with the same title. The success of the prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which focuses on President Snow and was released as a book in 2020 and a movie in 2023, has prompted the series to delve further into the prequel universe, exploring how Haymitch won the Hunger Games of his youth and the intersections of his life with the parents of future protagonists Katniss and Peeta.
Francis Lawrence, the director of the Hunger Games series, will return to helm Sunrise on the Reaping, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
