Actor Jesse Plemons Signs Up for The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping Event

Jesse Plemons has joined the cast of the forthcoming Hunger Games prequel film, "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping." He will portray the character Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the original franchise.

According to Deadline, Plemons will take on the role of a younger Plutarch, offering a fresh perspective on the intricate character as he navigates the world of Panem before the events of the initial films. In the original Hunger Games series, Plutarch was a Gamemaker for the Capitol, who eventually emerges as a pivotal leader in the rebellion against them.

Plemons, who recently appeared in Civil War and Black Mirror, is set to replace the digitally recreated Plutarch from the 2015 film Mockingjay Part 2, following Hoffman's passing in 2014.

Lionsgate previously announced Joseph Zada as the young Haymitch, Whitney Peak as his love Lenore Baird, and McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner in the prequel. The movie, set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, sees Plutarch as a young District 12 resident working as a cameraman, occasionally encouraging Haymitch Abernathy to survive the blood sport.

"The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," directed by returning Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.

The prequel was also announced alongside a book of the same name by Suzanne Collins. Following the success of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes"-a President Snow-focused prequel released as a book in 2020 and a film in 2023-the series delved back into the prequel realm to explore how Haymitch won the Games of his youth and how his life intersects with the parents of future protagonists Katniss and Peeta.
