Actor Jesse Plemons signs on for 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise' prequel series, set during the Reaping.
Jesse Plemons joins the upcoming Hunger Games prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping," taking on the role of a young Plutarch Heavensbee. Previously portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the main Hunger Games films, Plemons will bring his unique interpretation to the character. The film, set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, sees Plutarch as a District 12 kid working as a cameraman.
Lionsgate recently announced Plemons' casting, following revelations of Joseph Zada as the young Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as his love Lenore Baird, and McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner. These characters intersect with the lives of eventual protagonists Katniss and Peeta in intricate ways.
In the original films, Plutarch was a Gamemaker for the Capital and a crucial leader in the rebellion against them. In "Sunrise," Plutarch encourages Haymitch to survive the blood sport as a cameraman.
Plemons' collaboration with Hoffman (in The Master) and his reputation for selective, high-quality roles solidify him as an ideal choice for the role. Francis Lawrence, the returning director for the prequel, is set to helm the project, with a release date scheduled for November 20, 2026.
The Hunger Games series returned to the prequel well following the success of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," a President Snow-focused prequel. Lionsgate announced the prequel alongside Suzanne Collins' book of the same name.
