Actor Jesse Metcalfe confesses about the Emmy-winning series he elected to pass on auditioning for
Jesse Metcalfe Regrets Passing on Iconic Role in "Entourage"
Jesse Metcalfe, best known for his roles in shows like Desperate Housewives and John Tucker Must Die, has expressed regret over a missed opportunity that could have significantly altered his career trajectory. In an interview with People, Metcalfe revealed that he passed on the audition for the lead role in the hit TV show Entourage, a role that ultimately went to Adrian Grenier.
The pilot script for Entourage crossed Metcalfe's desk, but he initially thought it was "stupid" and decided not to audition. Little did he know, this decision would come to haunt him as the show became a highly successful series, running for eight seasons and receiving a total of 40 nominations for Golden Globe and Emmy awards, winning six.
The show, which followed the character of Vincent Chase, an emerging A-lister in Hollywood, could have provided Metcalfe with increased exposure and opportunities much earlier in his career. Metcalfe has also hinted that practical life pressures influenced his decision, as he was supporting his household at the time.
In 2011, Entourage came to an end, and in 2015, Adrian Grenier returned as Chase for a feature film of the same name. Metcalfe, who has since acknowledged the significance of the role he missed, can only watch from the sidelines.
Interestingly, Metcalfe also lost a lead role in another popular TV show, The Vampire Diaries. An executive at CW reportedly told him that he could never play a vampire because he has too nice of a face. This comment was made on Tori Spelling's misSPELLING podcast.
Despite these missed opportunities, Metcalfe has learned from his mistakes. He admitted that skipping the Entourage audition taught him that he doesn't know everything. He now looks back on the role he could have played as Vincent Chase with a sense of longing, wishing he was a part of the iconic show that has left an indelible mark on television history.
