Actor Gary Oldman discusses his decision to turn down the role in 'Edward Scissorhands'
In an unexpected turn of events, renowned actor Gary Oldman declined the offer to play the titular character in the movie Edward Scissorhands. The film, released in cinemas on December 14, 1990, became a critical success, but Oldman's path never crossed with that of Edward Scissorhands.
Oldman's agent was involved in the discussions about the role, and he was indeed offered the part. However, when the script arrived, Oldman expressed his confusion about the storyline. He found the script to be a "quirky, strange little script" involving an "Avon lady and the kid with the scissor hands" that simply didn't register with him.
At that time, Oldman was not familiar with Tim Burton's full body of work, so the story and concept didn't appeal to or make sense to him. Consequently, he decided it was "not my cup of tea" and declined the offer.
Johnny Depp ultimately played the role of Edward Scissorhands, and the film was praised for its unique narrative and Depp's captivating performance. Despite missing out on this iconic role, Oldman's career has been marked by a variety of memorable performances in films such as Sid and Nancy, The Dark Knight, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
