James Marsden Returns as Cyclops in "Avengers: Doomsday"

After a decade-long absence from the Marvel universe, James Marsden is set to reprise his iconic role as Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, in the upcoming film, "Avengers: Doomsday."

Marsden first donned the Cyclops costume in the original "X-Men" trilogy, which spanned from 2000 to 2006. His character met his end in "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006), but was later resurrected and made a brief appearance in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014) through a timeline alteration caused by time travel.

In "Avengers: Doomsday," Cyclops is depicted as a mutant and a strategic leader of the X-Men, with the ability to emit powerful optic energy beams controlled by a special visor. This highly anticipated film marks Marsden's first substantial Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project and a reintegration of Fox’s X-Men characters into the current Marvel cinematic universe.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Marsden expressed his excitement about being a part of the "gigantic" "Avengers: Doomsday" project and described the experience as a "blast" and a "nice little homecoming" to a beloved comic book icon that launched his career in major event films.

The film is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, as part of the MCU Phase Six. It will feature a star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr, Tom Hiddleston, Pedro Pascal, and Alan Cumming, as well as a reunion of original X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer.

Cyclops is a beloved character from the comic books, according to Marsden, and he feels grateful for the opportunity to return to the Marvel universe after hearing requests for his return for 20 years.
