Actor from Netflix assumes iconic Rambo character, with Sylvester Stallone expressing preferences for alternate candidates
In an unexpected turn of events, it has been revealed that Sylvester Stallone, the iconic actor known for his portrayal of John Rambo, had a specific Hollywood colleague in mind to play the new, younger Rambo in the upcoming prequel. Stallone expressed admiration for Ryan Gosling's genuine connection to the character, noting in a 2024 interview that Gosling was fascinated by Rambo and even used to dress as him in school, which demonstrated a strong personal affinity for the role[1][2].
However, the role ultimately went to Noah Centineo, who has been officially cast as the young John Rambo. Though Centineo was not Stallone's pick—and Stallone reportedly was unhappy with this casting decision—the reasons for the change appear to be related to studio or production decisions rather than Stallone's preference. Stallone was aware of the prequel production but not directly involved in casting, which led to Centineo being chosen instead[1][2][3][4][5].
The Rambo prequel, currently in production, will focus on Rambo's youth during the Vietnam War. Jalmari Helander ("Sisu") will direct the film, with the screenplay written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Lionsgate, which released the last two Rambo films, is the favored distributor for the prequel.
Noah Centineo, known for his roles in "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" and "Black Adam", will step into the boots of the young Rambo. Centineo's casting has been confirmed by industry magazine "Deadline".
It's important to note that Sylvester Stallone portrayed Vietnam War veteran John Rambo five times, with the most successful part being "Rambo: First Blood Part II" from 1985, which grossed around $150.4 million. However, so far, Stallone has not publicly commented on the new casting for the Rambo prequel.
Production of the Rambo prequel is expected to start in early 2026 in Thailand. The plot of the film remains a secret, but fans of the series are eagerly awaiting more details about this exciting new chapter in the Rambo saga.
