After nearly four decades, iconic duo Matthew Broderick (63) and Alan Ruck (68), famed for their roles in the '80s cult hit "Ferris Makes Blue" (1986), could be making us chuckle once more with a new buddy comedy. According to "Deadline.com", they're in talks for the film project "The Best Is Yet To Come". Allan Loeb ("Rock of Ages") is set to write the script, and Jon Turteltaub ("Last Vegas", "Meg") will direct[1].

Interestingly, the plot is not a remake of their past buddy comedies but rather borrows from the French comedy "Le meilleur reste à venir" (2019), which was previously adapted by Til Schweiger (as both director and lead actor) in Germany under the title "Das Beste kommt noch!" in 2023[2][3].

In the French original, our protagonists are a pair of friends who become convinced, due to a major misunderstanding, that one of them has only a few months left to live. These characters are stark opposites - one, a playboy, the other a steady familyman. They embark on a wild adventure to celebrate their friendship and life[2].

Dimitri Rassam, who produced the original French film, will serve as the executive producer for the new film. Filming could begin as early as this summer, it's reported[4].

Celluloid Swagger

While the original "Ferris Makes Blue", directed by John Hughes, saw the young Broderick play the school-averse Ferris Bueller, we didn't get to see much of Ruck's character Cameron until later on. In "The Best Is Yet To Come", they'll share the screen as old friends embarking on an adventure to find the estranged son of one of them after a misunderstanding, all while trying to tick off life's unfulfilled objectives[1][2][3].

There's also whispers of a "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" sequel in the works, but Broderick and Ruck won't be reprising their roles for that project[4].
