The world of TV bids adieu to a timeless character actor: Dietmar Moessmer is no more. The Austrian thespian, renowned to millions for his portrayal of Chief Inspector Hans Hafner in the "Tatort" series, breathed his last on Friday at 69 after a prolonged illness, according to "tirol.ORF.at".

Hailing from the picturesque town of Zams, Tirol, on August 10, 1955, Moessmer boasted a career of over four decades, marked by both on-stage and on-camera performances. His chameleonic flair as an actor made him a hot commodity in numerous German and Austrian productions.

Dietmar Moessmer's Career Lit up the Stage

Moessmer began his theatrical journey on the boards of various stages. After honing his craft at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, he was engaged there from 1980 to 1982. A pivotal moment in his career occurred when revered actress and director Ruth Drexel recruited him to the burgeoning Munich Volkstheater in 1983. He remained with this esteemed theater, with intermittent breaks, until 1991.

During the summer months, Moessmer frequently traveled back to his roots in Tirol and starred in the Telfs folk plays. His riveting interpretation of Norg in Felix Mitterer's "Drachendurst" will forever be etched in audiences' minds.

Moessmer made his film debut in Christian Berger's 1984 "Raffl". This was followed by nearly 40 more incredible film projects with celebrated directors. Yet, it took his role in the ARD crime series inspired by the novels of the renowned American-Swiss author Donna Leon to captivate television audiences.

The Legendary Hans Hafner

For 19 years, from 2000 to 2019, Dietmar Moessmer brought Hans Hafner to life in the "Tatort" adaptations. This charismatic and unusual character swiftly became a fan favorite, transcending the confines of a supporting role. The electrifying chemistry between him and Uwe Kockisch (81), who portrayed his trusted ally Commissario Voller, played a significant role in the series' success.

Alongside his iconic role in "Tatort", Moessmer graced numerous other TV formats, such as "SOKO Munich", "Der Alte", "Polizeiruf 110", "Tatort", "Die Rosenheim-Cops", "Der Bergdoktor", "Der Bulle von Tölz", and more.

Among his last appearances on the silver screen were roles in the ARD film "Mein Vater, der Esel und ich" and an episode of the ZDF series "Frühling". Concurrently, Moessmer continued to lend his voice to various radio plays on ORF.
