Actor Denzel Washington expresses disinterest in the Oscars, stating he doesn't care about them and believes they hold no value after his death.
Denzel Washington, the esteemed actor with nine Academy Award nominations and two wins under his belt, has shared his perspective on the importance of Oscars in his illustrious career. In a series of interviews and statements, Washington has made it clear that he does not prioritise awards when making his acting choices.
In an interview for the upcoming film "Highest 2 Lowest," Washington expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating, "I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff." This sentiment was echoed by his co-star Ethan Hawke, who recalled a conversation with Washington where he stated he was happier that he lost the best supporting actor Oscar for "Gladiator II" to someone else.
Washington's approach towards awards is not about elevating his own status, but rather about elevating the status of the award. As Hawke put it, Washington advised him that one should not want an award to improve one's status, but rather one should want to improve the award's status.
This humble and unpretentious attitude towards awards is evident in Washington's response to perceived snubs. When asked about not receiving a best supporting actor nomination for "Gladiator II," he sarcastically told The New York Times, "Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I'm so upset. I'm happy for all that did, and I'm happy with what I'm doing."
Washington believes that man gives the award, but God gives the reward. He does not place value on career milestones like Academy Awards and is not particularly interested in where he keeps his Oscars.
"Highest 2 Lowest" will be available to stream on Apple TV+ starting Sept. 5. The film, which opens in select theaters Aug. 15 from A24 and Apple Studios, promises to showcase Washington's talent and commitment to his craft, beyond the pursuit of awards.
