Olivia Munn's Unexpected Comeback to Acting
Determined to abandon her acting career. - Actor Contemplates Leaving Show Business
Hey there!
After stealing the spotlight in Apple TV+'s "Your Friends & Neighbors" alongside Jon Hamm, Olivia Munn (44) could've easily said goodbye to Hollywood. But she chose to stick around – and for good reasons. In a heartfelt chat with People magazine, Munn shared some personal struggles that almost saw her quit acting.
Munn, the comedian John Mulaney's (42) wife, has faced some rough patches. Postpartum anxiety reared its head after the birth of their son Malcolm in 2021. Then, in 2023, she was hit with a breast cancer diagnosis. Multiple surgeries, including a double mastectomy, followed, along with more treatments. However, life turned around with the arrival of their second child, a daughter named Mei, born via a surrogate in September 2024.
Why She Almost Quit Acting
Want the honest truth? Here it is: "I flippin' love acting, but John... he's just bonkers about it," Munn confessed to People magazine. "Not a single project I worked on in the last five or six years was worth sacrificing time with my family," she added. According to Munn, being in front of the camera felt scarily vulnerable compared to stepping behind it.
The excellent script and exceptional team behind "Your Buds & Neighbors" finally convinced her to return. "It was precisely what I needed to jump-start my motivation," she said. Plus, her husband, John, was all for it. "When I told him I was taking the gig, he was just stoked," she grinned. Munn candidly admitted, "I've had another operation on the calendar, and we knew Mei was on the way. I just felt ready to put my fears and worries aside."
If you think Munn's just bubbling with joy these days, you'd be right! "It's bonkers how I'm here with these two adorable kiddos two years after my cancer diagnosis," Munn marveled. "I'm just over-the-moon happy, grateful, and insanely proud of what I've managed to accomplish," she shared. "I wasn't sure I had it in me."
And here's a little insider scoop: Munn's health challenges were just part of the story. Postpartum anxiety and prioritizing her family also played massive roles in her decision to pause her acting career.
