Actor Alison Brie from Scream 4 criticizes the current state of the horror franchise, stating it allows too many characters to survive, yet expresses dissent towards a specific death scene, deeming it an error: "That was a mistake."

In a recent appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Alison Brie, star of Scream 4, shared her thoughts on the current era of the Scream franchise. Brie, who played Sidney Prescott's assistant, Rebecca Walters, in Scream 4, expressed concerns about the number of characters surviving in the films, believing it dilutes the tension and stakes.

Brie suggested that the core four characters—Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, Dewey Riley, and Rebecca Walters—need to be reduced significantly, with only two of them left alive by Scream 7. She argued that this would restore the franchise’s suspense and properly raise the stakes.

Brie also criticized the decision to kill off Dewey Riley, played by David Arquette, in Scream 5, calling it a big mistake. She believes the franchise should keep the original characters—Sidney, Gale, and Dewey—as central figures.

In a humorous note, Brie joked about the possibility of her character, Rebecca Walters, returning for Scream 7, despite her brutal death in Scream 4. She also hinted at a possible return in a dream sequence.

Matthew Lillard's Stu Macher, another original character, will reportedly appear in Scream 7, having been raised from the dead. However, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, who joined the franchise in Scream 5 and 6, won't be returning for Scream 7.

Scream 7 is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026. It remains to be seen if the film will address Brie's concerns by bringing greater character mortality back into the story. The film is included in a list of upcoming movies in 2025 and beyond.
