Actor Adrien Brody sported Brutalist clothing during his getaway in the Mediterranean region.
Adrien Brody, fresh off his second Oscar for The Brutalist, is making the most of his down time. He's back to creating art, which some folks find a bit controversial (his latest assemblages include a Warhol-esque Marilyn Monroe, a Basquiat-inspired piece, and a menacing Maggie Simpson armed with a switchblade). He's also been making music described as a fusion of reggae, R&B, and dark hip hop. As of now, he's sunbathing in Sardinia with his ladylove, Georgina Chapman, and pals Edward Norton and David Blaine, along with their broods.
As Brody and the gang embarked on their Mediterranean voyage from the South of France on Monday, the actor was spotted in casual, laid-back attire - green cargos, sunglasses, and a white tee emblazoned with a mock emblem for The Presence of the Past, a (fake) retrospective of László Tóth, the architect character played by Brody in The Brutalist. This unique tee was designed and produced by A24, the film's production company, which also dabbles in merchandising. Unsurprisingly, it's now sold out.
For a provincial flair, Brody carried a woven straw tote bag.
The Tóth-themed tee serves as a nice nod to the impeccably dressed character, who has left a lasting impression on the silver screen. I can't help but wonder what Tóth would make of the merchandisefrenzy: Would he, a modernist, find it pretentious, or would he appreciate the dadaistic irony? I envision him as more of a minimalist, favoring simple, plain white tees.
Still, if A24 decides to release an official tee adorned with Tóth in his stylish gray pleated sweater, I'm ready and waiting. But remember, Tóth is a fictional character, and any Tóth merchandise is likely to be unofficial or fan-made, rather than legitimate film memorabilia.

- As celebrities like Adrien Brody embrace merchandising opportunities, such as the sold-out 'The Presence of the Past' tee based on 'The Brutalist,' the blurring lines between movies-and-tv, fashion, and entertainment invites us to question the cultural implications of such trends.
